Experience the marvelous Berchtesgaden Alps. More than 120 kilometers (75 miles) of hiking trails for all skill levels lead you past meadows, pastures, and crags. Follow the coastline of the Königssee located about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) away from the hotel. Or take one of the panorama trails up to the alpine pastures. The proud Watzmann with its summit towering at 2,713 meters (8,901 ft) is a major attraction for mountaineers and bikers from all over the world. The mountain massif lies just behind the Landhaus Sonnenstein. Our guests can start their tour of the Watzmann right at our doorstep.
The idyllic peninsula St. Bartholomä is a special place on the Lake Königssee. Our guests can experience its lesser-known side: The boat crosses the calm Königssee illuminated by the last rays of the sun. On St. Bartholomä the participants are greeted with Bavarian music. A catered event to round off the boat tour is also possible on request.

The salt cavern in Berchtesgaden is one of a kind in wester Europe. Located in the large salt stock in the Untersalzberg, the cavern shields visitors from all all kinds of environmental factors. In this calm and homely place, you will find tranquility and relaxation.

In the months of July and August Just the Salzburg Festival takes place only 25 kilometers (16 miles) away from the Landhaus Sonnenstern. Every year, the people of Salzburg as well as visitors get the opportunity to enjoy numerous top-class concerts as well as opera performances and theater plays in Mozart’s hometown. The festival first took place as early as 1920. And it has lost none of its magic.
The “Seefest” on the last weekend in July is the highlight of the summer season at the Königssee. With music, food and beverages, and plenty of entertainment, the festivities at the Seelädle start as early as 10 AM. The crowning moment of the event is the traditional huge fireworks display at the shore of the Königssee that starts at 9:30 PM.
The Berchtesgaden National Park with its many summits, wild ravines, and picturesque mountain ranges offers terrific routes for bikers and mountain bikers of all skill levels. The house has a bicycle storage room where you can conveniently and securely keep your bike. Quality e-bikes as well as mountain bikes can also be rented from the bike shop “ALPENBIKE”, which is located only 500 meters from the hotel, or at Movelo in Schönau am Königssee.
We offer additional brochures and leaflets with information as well as a biking map at the reception. The tour plan features suggested routs and describes their characteristics. It also includes a link to a bike app.
The Outdoor Club Berchtesgaden, the DAV Summit Club, and the certified mountain climbers of the region offer guided tours for those who are looking to climb the Watzmann. The area is also great for climbing enthusiasts. The “Grünstein” via ferrata (C/D+) is located only about 1 kilometer away from the hotel.
During the cold season, the Hotel Landhaus Sonnenstern offers its guests activities in the snow, such as snowshoeing and skiing.
Skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding are only some of the sports that you can practice in this area during the winter. We love skiing and you will love the marvelous winter sports conditions.
But that’s not all. Sled and bobsled racing, Bavarian curling, and ice skating are also part of the winter fun in Berchtesgaden.
The Berchtesgaden Alpes are home to Kathy Hölzl, world champion in giant slalom. The huge skiing area, the “Jenner” is located only about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away from the Landhaus Sonnenstern. The high altitude and the large amounts of snowfall make sure that you can go skiing on most winter days.
The skiing area “Gütschen” is especially attractive for snowboarders. There is a halfpipe and a large fun park – and Gütschen was even the venue of the Snowboard World Championships once.
Not far from the house, you can get to the ski tracks of the Königssee area (skating and classic). A special experience that we recommend is the illuminated night track past the cross-country skiing center “Langlaufzentrum Aschauerweiher”, and along the Königssee.
You can also take skiing lessons all around the area.

The Königssee also has something special to offer for New Year’s. At the “Seefest” on the 1st of January at 12 O’clock, the guests are welcomed at the “Seelände”. In addition to food and drink as well as the huge fireworks display at 6 PM, the party continues until morning.
